What is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop in individuals who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. These events can include but are not limited to, combat exposure, physical or sexual assault, natural disasters, accidents, injuries or serious injuries, and any adverse event regardless of the severity. PTSD can significantly impact a person’s daily functioning, relationships, and overall quality of life.

What is Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD)

Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) is a related condition that can occur in individuals who have experienced prolonged or repeated trauma, such as childhood abuse, neglect, or ongoing interpersonal trauma. C-PTSD is characterised by additional symptoms such as emotional dysregulation, difficulties with self-esteem, and challenges in forming and maintaining healthy relationships.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms of PTSD and C-PTSD can vary from person to person but often include intrusive memories or flashbacks of the traumatic event, avoidance of reminders of the trauma, negative changes in mood or cognition, and heightened arousal or reactivity. Over time, individuals may learn to suppress or “dampen down” these symptoms, only for them to resurface later, often triggered by reminders or similar situations and can have a negative impact in all areas of your life which those close to you may find difficult to understand. I often hear clients reporting comments by others as “that was years ago, let it go” or “you’re not still on about that are you ?” This often comes with my client’s inability to understand what is happening to them and why they are reacting.

How do the symptoms impact your life?

The symptoms of PTSD and C-PTSD can have profound effects on various aspects of life, including work, relationships, and overall well-being. Individuals may experience difficulties concentrating, irritability, mood swings, and sleep disturbances. They may also struggle with feelings of guilt, shame, or self-blame related to the traumatic event. These symptoms can significantly impair functioning and lead to social isolation, difficulties in relationships, and challenges in maintaining employment or academic pursuits.

What is the PTSD Recognised Therapy?

One highly effective treatment for PTSD and C-PTSD is Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. EMDR therapy is a structured approach that helps individuals process traumatic memories and reprocess negative beliefs associated with the trauma. It has been extensively researched and shown to be effective in reducing symptoms of PTSD and related disorders.

What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR therapy involves recalling distressing memories while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or tapping, to facilitate the brain’s natural healing process. This helps to reprocess traumatic memories and integrate them into a healthier narrative, reducing their emotional charge and allowing for greater emotional regulation and resilience.

Why Choose EMDR Therapy?

As a specialist in EMDR therapy, I am trained in this evidence-based approach to trauma treatment. I received my training at Worcester University under the guidance of esteemed practitioner Derrick Farrell MBE. Additionally, I hold a BSc in hypnotherapy from Birmingham University which provides me with additional techniques for grounding and enhancing the therapeutic process. Whether in-person or online, I am dedicated to providing a safe and supportive environment for your healing journey.

What if I can’t or don’t want to talk about my trauma?

Therapy can also include a technique known as “Blind Protocol” where the individual can heal from trauma and not disclose the event to the therapist.
