What is Stress?

Stress is a natural response to demands or pressures from external or internal sources, known as stressors, that disrupt our equilibrium. It can be triggered by various factors such as work deadlines, financial problems, relationship conflicts, major life changes, or even perceived threats. When we encounter stressors, our bodies release hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which prepare us to respond to the perceived threat—this is often referred to as the “fight-or-flight” response.

How Stress Differs from Anxiety

While stress and anxiety are related, they are distinct experiences:
Stress is typically a response to specific stressors or demands and is often short-term. It’s a natural and sometimes even helpful reaction that can motivate us to take action and adapt to challenges.

Anxiety, on the other hand, is a more generalised and pervasive feeling of worry, fear, or apprehension, often without a specific trigger. It can persist even when stressors are removed and may interfere with daily functioning.

How do stress symptoms impact your life?

Stress can impact every aspect of your life, manifesting in various physical, emotional, and behavioural symptoms. Here’s how stress can affect you:

Physical Health:

Prolonged stress can lead to a range of physical health problems, including:

Cardiovascular Issues: Stress increases blood pressure and heart rate, which can contribute to hypertension, heart disease, and stroke.
Digestive Problems: Stress can disrupt digestion, leading to stomach-aches, indigestion, acid reflux, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Weakened Immune System: Chronic stress suppresses the immune system, making you more susceptible to infections and illnesses.
Musculoskeletal Pain: Stress can cause muscle tension, headaches, back pain, and exacerbate conditions like arthritis and fibromyalgia.

Emotional Well-being:

Stress can take a toll on your mental health, resulting in:

Anxiety and Depression: Chronic stress can contribute to feelings of anxiety, depression, irritability, mood swings, and overwhelming sadness.
Burnout: Excessive stress from work or personal life can lead to burnout, characterised by emotional exhaustion, detachment, and a sense of inefficacy.
Sleep Disturbances: Stress can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to insomnia, difficulty falling asleep, frequent waking during the night, and feeling unrested upon waking.

Cognitive Functioning:

Stress can impair cognitive function and affect your ability to think clearly, concentrate, and make decisions. It may also lead to:

Memory Problems: Chronic stress can impact short-term and long-term memory, making it difficult to recall information and concentrate on tasks.
Poor Judgment: High levels of stress can impair judgment and decision-making abilities, leading to impulsivity and risk-taking behaviour.
Difficulty Learning: Stress interferes with the brain’s ability to form new connections and retain information, hindering learning and cognitive performance.

Behavioural Changes:

Stress can influence your behaviour in various ways, leading to:

Changes in Eating Habits: Some people may overeat or undereat in response to stress, leading to weight gain or loss.
Increased Substance Use: Stress may trigger substance abuse or reliance on alcohol, drugs, or tobacco as coping mechanisms.
Social Withdrawal: Chronic stress can lead to social withdrawal, isolation, and avoidance of social activities and relationships.
Procrastination: Stress can lead to procrastination, avoidance of tasks, and decreased productivity.

Overall, stress can significantly impact your quality of life, relationships, work performance, and overall well-being. It’s essential to recognise the signs of stress and implement healthy coping strategies to manage stress effectively and reduce its negative effects on your life.

Treatment

Effective treatment for anxiety disorders often involves therapy and sometimes medication. One such therapy is Moon Penny Therapy, a comprehensive 5-step anxiety management program I developed. Drawing upon years of experience working with stress and anxiety and serving as the anxiety lead in an NHS role before transitioning to private practice, I devised Moon Penny Therapy to provide individuals with practical tools and strategies for managing stress and anxiety effectively.

Moon Penny Therapy

Moon Penny Therapy is a comprehensive approach to anxiety and stress management that identifies and addresses the root causes of stress while equipping individuals with coping mechanisms to navigate daily challenges.

The stages of Moon Penny Therapy include:

Assessment and Understanding: We begin by gaining a deep understanding of your unique anxiety triggers, symptoms, and experiences.
Education and Awareness: I provide education about anxiety disorders and teach you techniques to increase self-awareness and recognise early signs of anxiety.
Coping Strategies: We develop coping strategies tailored to your specific needs, including relaxation techniques and I use a personalised hypnotherapy session specifically devised for you and enhanced by a bespoke aromatherapy blend, meticulously crafted to your needs, and recorded with soothing background music or nature sounds, ensuring you can recreate the experience in the comfort of your own home inclusive of the aromatherapy blend.
Integration and Maintenance: Finally, we focus on integrating the skills and strategies you’ve learned into your daily life, empowering you to manage stress independently and maintain long-term well-being.
